Dr. Sandahl’s lecture will focus on artworks in the exhibition "The Flesh of the World" in which differences in embodiment (physical, sensory, mental) generate new aesthetic possibilities in visual arts and performance, including sports. The commingling of disability art and culture, performance art, and adaptive sport raises important—and perplexing—questions.
"The Flesh of the World" is on view at the Doris McCarthy Gallery and the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery/University of Toronto Art Centre until October 10, 2015. The exhibition pushes the limits of the body and challenge dominant culture’s understanding of normativity and embodiment through work by Canadian and international artists who use the body as a medium.
Reception to follow at UTAC art lounge, featuring a participatory performance by Catherine Richards. This event is free and everyone is welcome.
