Katie German is a farmer, teacher and food justice advocate. She runs School Grown, a schoolyard farming social enterprise at FoodShare Toronto that hires young people to farm their schoolyards and rooftops. Students get paid jobs and school credit while farming, harvesting, selling veggies at the farmers market, packing restaurant orders, and participating in cooking classes and workshops. Katie also helps support new farmers in the city through the informal organization Toronto Farmers and is dedicated to dismantling systemic forms of oppression in our food system through her work. She is also studying at OISE in the winter months – completing a master’s thesis project that hired School Grown youth farmers into paid positions as food justice curriculum writers.
